Expert comments on importance of SCO membership for Belarus

MINSK, 3 April (BelTA) — The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is considered in Belarus as an important regional international organization, Andrei Rusakovich, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Eurasian Studies of the Belarusian State University, told the media on the sidelines of the expert roundtable “The Unifying Potential of the SCO in the Emerging Multipolar World” organized at Kazakhstan’s embassy in Minsk on 3 April.

According to the professor, the importance of joining the SCO for Belarus is determined by a number of factors. “The SCO is considered in Belarus as an important regional international organization, participation in which will provide an opportunity to expand interaction with our partners in both multilateral and bilateral formats. This applies to all areas of activity: policy and diplomacy, economy, humanitarian affairs, and regional security issues. Belarus, in turn, positions itself as a responsible, active and reliable partner in the organization,” said Andrei Rusakovich.

He emphasized that in recent years, taking into account the Western sanctions, Belarus has been focusing on strengthening cooperation with the countries of the Global South, increasing the efficiency of integration in the post-Soviet space, and advocating the formation of a truly multipolar world.

“Joining the SCO is designed to strengthen this trend. The SCO can become one of the centers of multilateral efforts to respond to global challenges, strengthen cooperation in countering the threats of terrorism, extremism, organized crime and drug trafficking,” the doctor of historical sciences said.
