Tomasz Szmydt: Polish authorities want to make an example of me to scare others

MINSK, 11 May (BelTA) – I think that the Polish authorities want to teach me a lesson, to make an example of me to scare others into silence, the Polish dissident, judge Tomasz Szmydt said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel as he commented on the reaction from the official Warsaw to his move to Belarus.

«I expected a reaction, but I did not expect this. The Polish authorities simply went into hysterics and started to accuse me of espionage. But this is some kind of nonsense, rubbish,» Tomasz Szmydt said.

The Pole noted that he has no acquaintances either in the White House or in the Pentagon. «I do not have access to NATO documents,» he stated. «But it is worth considering why just a few truthful words provoked such panic in Poland.»

Tomasz Szmydt stressed that he is in favor of normalizing relations between Poland and Belarus, but the ruling elite in Poland does not share his views. These views are not shared in the United States and the UK. «They want to divide us,» Tomasz Szmydt believes.
«It seems to me that now they [the Polish authorities] want to teach me a lesson, to make an example of me to scare others from following in my footsteps. Or to lock me up or, for example, or to organize an accident with me, what would be the best outcome for them,» Tomasz Szmydt said.

According to the Polish judge, the official Warsaw does not want other Poles to share his point of view on the need to normalize relations between Belarus and Poland. At the same time, he noted, ordinary Poles have nothing against Belarusians.

“Ordinary Poles did not react in the way the Polish authorities did. But the proposal of normalizing relations between Poland and Belarus is not a good idea for the United States and especially the United Kingdom,» he said.

Tomasz Szmydt is a judge of the 2nd Department of the Voivodeship Administrative Court in Warsaw. Previously, he held various positions in the judicial system and justice bodies of Poland. He was the head of the legal department at the National Council of Judges of Poland.

Due to his disagreement with the policies and actions by the authorities, he was forced to leave Poland and is currently in Belarus. He was persecuted and threatened for his independent political position.
